Golden Monkey Tracking Experience in Rwanda.

The golden monkey tracking experience in Rwanda is a remarkable wildlife adventure that offers visitors a chance to encounter one of the region’s rarest and most captivating primates. This amazing activity is done in Volcanoes National Park, located in the northwest part of the country, which is about a 2 to 3-hour drive from Kigali city to the park. It’s one of the oldest national parks in Africa, established in 1925 to protect the endangered animals that existed at that time. Golden monkeys are a subspecies of Sykes monkeys, also known as the blue monkeys. They are endemic to the Virunga region, found in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo, but visitors can only see them in Volcanoes National Park and Mgahinga National Park. They feed on bamboo, small insects, and fruit, and spend most of their time playing from one tree to another.

Unlike the more demanding gorilla treks, golden monkey tracking is relatively gentle, making it accessible to a wide range of travellers. As you follow experienced guides through the forest, the excitement builds until you encounter a lively troop of golden monkeys, darting through the bamboo, playfully interacting, and occasionally pausing just long enough for the perfect photograph. This experience is not only enjoyable but also deeply rewarding, offering insight into Rwanda’s conservation efforts while allowing visitors to connect with nature intimately and unforgettably.

Once they are located, participants will observe and learn more about their behaviours. They will see how they feed, swinging from tree tops and another, take care of one another, which is an amazing experience. Participants will take as many photos as possible, and it’s advisable to spare some time and just enjoy their presence.

What is the Best Time to see Golden Monkeys.

Volcanoes National Park is open throughout the year, and the best time to do the golden monkey tracking depends on the traveller’s interests. They can visit in the dry season or in the wet season. The dry season is the most preferred time of the year by travellers, which is from June to September and December to February. During these months, the park receives little to no rainfall, and the trails are dry, making it easy to search for these playful monkeys. The vegetation cover is scattered, which creates clear views and shots. The wet season is from October to November and March to May. During these months, the park receives enough rainfall, making it muddy and slippery. The vegetation cover is tall and dense, which creates unclear views. However, this season favours budget travellers as most lodges and tour operators give discounts.
