How to Access Kidepo Valley National Park.

Travellers planning a safari to Kidepo always research how to access Kidepo Valley National Park, and this blog will discuss the various alternative routes and modes of transport available for visitors . The park can be accessed by either road transport or air transport, depending on the traveller’s interests. Kidepo Valley National Park is one of the most interesting national parks in Uganda, celebrated for its true wilderness and rich biodiversity. It’s located in the far northeastern part of the Karamoja region, bordering South Sudan and Kenya. It’s one of the most isolated parks in Uganda, with more than 700 kilometers from Entebbe or Kampala, the starting points of the journey. It’s the third largest park in the country, covering an area of approximately 1,442 square kilometers. It has a rich biodiversity, home to over 500 bird species, 80 mammal species, including the African Big Four mammals, 700 plant species and 200 butterfly species. These contribute to the park’s safari activities that attract thousands of nature lovers who come and experience the park’s beauty, like game drives, birding, walking safaris and cultural encounters.

How to Access Kidepo Valley National Park.

Travellers can access Kidepo Valley National Park by using road transport or air transport, and the mode of transport depends on the traveller’s budget and interests. By road transport, this is the most frequently used mode of transport by travellers since its cost effective, though it takes many hours to reach the park. Travellers can book through a licensed tour company that will arrange a private vehicle with a driver guide, or they can do a self-drive to the park. The park has two routes that visitors can use: the northern route, which allows visitors to have stopovers at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary, the only place in Uganda where visitors can see Rhinos and the Karuma Falls, and the eastern route allows them to have a stopover at the Sipi Falls. The Northern routes include Kampala- Gulu- Kitgum- Kidepo, which is the most used route by travellers. It’s about 570 kilometers, which takes about 10- 12 hours drive. Kampala- Lira- Kotido-Kabong- Kidepo is another alternative for the northern route, it’s about 710 km.  The eastern routes Kampala- via Mbale- Soroti- Kotido- Kaabong- Kidepo, the journey is about 785 kilometres and approximately 745 kilometres from Kampala via Mbale- Soroti- Kaabongo-Kidepo. All these routes allow visitors to explore the breathtaking views of the countryside.

Alternatively, visitors can access Kidepo National Park by using a chartered flight or a scheduled flight from either Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to Apoka Airstrip, which is about 2 hours. This is the fastest way of accessing the park, and it’s suitable for travellers who don’t want to sit for longer hours or have a few days for a safari, and they want to maximize them.

Best Time to Visit the Park.

After discussing how to access Kidepo National Park, let’s explore the best times to visit the park. It is open to travellers year-round, but the ideal time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from June to September and again from December to February. During this period, there is little to no rainfall, the tracks are less muddy and slippery, and the park experiences cooler temperatures, making it easier to navigate.

You can also visit the park during the wet season, which is marked by heavy rainfall. While the tracks can become slippery and muddy, making it more challenging to explore them, this season is favourable for budget travelers, as many accommodations and local travel companies offer discounts.
