When to Trek Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda

Are you planning your dream gorilla safari and wondering when to trek mountain gorillas in Rwanda? Worry no more; this blog will guide you on the appropriate time to trek mountain gorillas in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. Volcanoes National Park is one of the few destinations in the world where gorilla trekking takes place. It’s located in the northern part of the country, and it’s one of the most accessible gorilla destinations in the world, about 2 to 3 hours drive from Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda, to the park. This is a remarkable safari destination that allows nature lovers and primatologists to see these awesome creatures face to face in their natural habitats. It’s the second place with the highest number of gorillas after Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, hosting over 30% of the world’s population of the endangered mountain gorillas. Volcanoes National Park is open throughout the year, and the best time to see gorillas depends on the individual travel plans. The park receives two seasons, the dry season and the wet season, all of which provide excellent chances of seeing the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitats.

Dry Season.

According to feedback from past travellers, the dry season is the most preferred season by travellers to trek mountain gorillas in Rwanda. This is known as the peak season, which is from June to September and December to February. During this period, the park receives little to no rainfall, and the park is less muddy and slippery, making it easy to search for the endangered mountain gorillas. The vegetation cover is short and scattered, which provides clear views of the endangered mountain gorillas and clear shots. Since it’s a peak season, travellers should book gorilla permits early, at least 3 to 6 months before travelling, to avoid disappointment. Gorilla permits are subject to availability on a first come first serve basis.

Wet Season

Travellers can also trek gorillas in Rwanda during the wet season, which is from October to November and March to May. This is commonly referred to as the low season, with few travellers visiting the park. During this season, travellers find it easy to get the gorilla permits since few visitors visit the park to do gorilla trekking. This season favours last-minute bookers since there are fewer people visiting and permits are always available in this season. Travellers should be aware that in this season, the park receives heavy rainfall, and it’s always muddy and slippery, making it challenging to penetrate the park. The vegetation cover is dense and tall, creating an obstruction to penetrating the park and viewing the gentle giants in their natural habitats. It might be challenging to take pictures since it rains at any time of the day, and the tall vegetation cover creates unclear views. However, this season is suitable for budget-friendly travellers as most lodges and travel companies offer discounts during this season.
