Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park – Birding in the afternoon

You will first meet our birding guide for a quick briefing before embarking on a journey of 268 km from Kigali city to Nyungwe Forest National Park. This trip takes approximately 6 hours, during which you will pass by interesting traditional homesteads. Feel free to request stopovers for photo opportunities and to stretch your legs along the way. On this day, you have the option to visit either the Nyanza Palace, which was the home of the last great cultural leaders Musinga and Rudahigwa, or the Ethnographic Museum in Butare.

You will arrive at Nyungwe Forest National Park in time for lunch. Afterward, head into the forest for an afternoon birding trip, where you will have the chance to spot various species, including the Red-faced Woodland Warbler, Mountain Masked Apalis, Grauer’s Swamp Warbler, Ruwenzori Apalis, and Shelley’s Crimsonwing, among others. Finally, you will return to your booked lodge for check-in, dinner, and an overnight stay at Nyungwe Hill Top View Hotel.

Day 2: Full day birding in Nyungwe Forest National Park

You will start your day 2 of 3 Days Birding Safari to Nyungwe Forest National Park with an early morning cup of coffee before heading to Nyungwe Forest for a full-day birding safari. This guided birding walk into the forest provides excellent opportunities to spot a variety of bird species, including several Albertine Rift endemics, resident birds, and both migratory and accidental visitors.

You may encounter species such as the Red-chested Sunbird, White-tailed Blue-flycatcher, Regal Sunbird, Rockefeller’s Sunbird, Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird, Mountain Masked Apalis, Chestnut-throated Apalis, Kivu Ground-Thrush, Black-faced Apalis, Collared Apalis, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Stripe-breasted Tit, Miombo Rock-Thrush, Grauer’s Warbler, Purple-breasted Sunbird, Archer’s Robin-Chat, Variable Sunbird, Red-throated Alethe, Ruwenzori Turaco, Streaky Seedeater, Handsome Francolin, Olive Woodpecker, Great Blue Turaco, White-headed Wood-hoopoe, Mountain Greenbul, Rwenzori Hill-babbler, Mountain Yellow Warbler, Cinnamon Bracken Warbler, Northern Puffback, White-starred Robin, Dusky Crimsonwing, Thick-billed Seedeater, Rwenzori Double-collared Sunbird, and Barred Long-tailed Cuckoo, as well as Waller’s Starling, among many others. After a day of birdwatching, return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay at Nyungwe Hill Top View Hotel.

Day 3: Chimpanzee trekking & transfer to Kigali

After breakfast, head to the park headquarters for your chimpanzee trekking experience. During your tour, keep an eye out for some bird species you may have missed in previous days. The chimp safari in Nyungwe Forest National Park lasts about 2 to 5 hours. After encountering the primates, you’ll spend a full hour with them, watching them play and swing from tree branches. Be sure to take as many photos as possible. Afterward, return to your lodge for lunch and check out. Later, you’ll transfer to Kigali International Airport to conclude your 3-day Birding Safari in Nyungwe Forest National Park.
