Uganda’s Other Safari Destinations to Explore

Besides the country’s diverse national parks, Uganda’s other safari destinations to explore equally provide visitors with an unforgettable adventure experience such as Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Sipi Falls, Lake Bunyonyi, source of the Nile. These are mainly complementary destinations or places that enhance the safari experiences within the country, apart from other famous destinations such as Murchison Falls National Park, Kibale National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kidepo Valley National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and many others. They help different categories of visitors to have quick access to some of the unique wildlife species and attractions, especially for adventure, enjoyment, and relaxation. This entails visitors such as those who do not prefer travelling long distances, those with limited time, and those on a tight budget, among others. These unique places include:

Lake Bunyonyi

This fresh water lake is one of the beautiful lakes found in the Kigezi region (southwest of Uganda) and the second deepest Lake in Africa, with cool weather to enjoy nature with scenic panoramic views. It is close to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park; therefore, after the gorilla trekking experience from both Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorilla parks, many travellers use it as a resting and relaxation place.

Lake Bunyonyi is Africa’s second deepest lake after Lake Tanganyika, with over 29 islands where different resorts, lodges, and hotels have been established for tourists to chill and wind. Visiting Lake Bunyonyi provides opportunities for unique and exciting activities such as boat cruises, birdwatching, canoeing, nature walks, ziplining, and sightseeing, among others. This lake offers stunning scenery with comfort and serenity, making it perfect for family tours and lovers.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary- Uganda’s Other Safari Destinations to Explore

This is the only place in Uganda where visitors can have a sighting of the white rhinos. This place is located in Nakasongola district along the Gulu-Nakasongola Highway on the road leading to Murchison Falls National Park. Historically, due to the political unrest in the country, rhinos became extinct in Uganda’s protected areas, particularly in Murchison Falls National Park and Kidepo Valley National Park in the 1980s. In order to restore the country’s lost rhinos, this sanctuary was established in the 1990s to reintroduce them into the wild.  Currently, the breeding project has resulted in over 48 white rhinos. While at the sanctuary, visitors spend 1 hour watching the rhinos graze in their natural setting. Visiting Ziwa rhino sanctuary allows tourists to see and complete all members of the big five mammals while on a Ugandan wildlife safari.  There is much more to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary than rhino tracking. The sanctuary also houses wildlife species such as giraffes, antelopes, and several bird species, offering an atmosphere of a national park to the visitors.

Source of the Nile

Uganda’s River Nile is famous globally for its instrumental role in the earliest civilizations.  The Nile is the longest river in the world, whose source emanates from Lake Victoria in Jinja city. Its long journey of 6,500km begins from Uganda and continues to Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea. Similar to other water bodies, the iconic River Nile provides unique, adventurous, and exhilarating activities. Several visitors flock to Jinja each year to witness the source of the Nile, and also participate in related adventure activities such as horse riding, sport fishing, ziplining, bungee jumping, tubing, water cycling, white water rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, quad biking, and others on the Nile River. Your visit to the source of the Nile is the climax of a Jinja tour. To access the actual source, you have to get into a boat that goes all the way to a monumental site or landmark.

Ssese Islands- Uganda’s Other Safari Destinations to Explore

These exciting Ssese Islands are located in Lake Victoria, the world’s largest inland freshwater lake, with over 80 islands. The famous and most visited island in Ssese is Bugala, where the Kalangala district is situated. However, Bugala Island is frequently mistaken to be the true Ssese Island, yet it’s just one of the several islands that make up the Ssese Islands. These islands have several resorts and lodges where visitors can go for enjoyment, relaxation, and a weekend break.  Visitors on such adventurous Uganda wildlife tours focus on having total fun, enjoyment, and forgetting about all their stress and real-world problems. Activities to do include fishing, sightseeing, camping, boat cruise, swimming, quad biking, boat rides, nature walks, canoeing, among others.

Uganda Wildlife Education Centre

Entebbe Wildlife Education Centre was established in 1952 as a reception centre for vulnerable wildlife species. It was formerly known as the Zoo, having started as a wildlife rehabilitation and Conservation Centre, but was later upgraded to a wildlife education centre in 1994. It is located in Entebbe town, on the shores of Lake Victoria. The Centre is home to several wildlife species, including big cats such as lions, leopards, tigers, primates, antelopes, and several bird species. It is indeed an interesting and exciting place that immerses visitors in an unforgettable adventure experience, making it a perfect destination to get a glimpse of Uganda’s highlights in terms of wildlife. In this context, the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) was established to offer an alternative experience of the natural wilderness.

Sipi falls- Uganda’s Other Safari Destinations to Explore

These stunning falls are classified into three large waterfalls that make up the famous Sipi Falls. The falls are found in the eastern part of Uganda on the slopes of Mount Elgon in Kapchorwa district. Each fall is special in its way, and visitors will be left in awe as they watch the breathtaking falls. These waterfalls are surrounded by a thrilling and exciting landscape and vegetation. Travellers on their way back to Mbale or Kampala are rewarded with amazing views of the great classic Karamoja plains and the perfect size of Mount Elgon.
