Budget-friendly safaris to Bwindi involve a few days and engaging in several activities. The main highlight is gorilla trekking, which, although costly, offers the chance to see endangered mountain gorillas. Other Park activities are cheaper and accessible for all travellers. Budget travellers should visit during the low season, from March to May and October to November, when lodges are more affordable and local tour operators often provide discounts on packages. To save more, travellers should use road transport instead of flying, as it is less expensive. Those seeking budget-friendly options should choose budget or mid-range accommodations, with many facilities available, including Broadbill Forest Camp, Nshongi Gorilla Nest, Gorilla Safari Lodge, and others.

Things to do during budget-friendly Bwindi Safaris

Gorilla trekking

In Bwindi, the most popular activity is gorilla trekking, where 23 mountain gorilla families may be seen in several park sectors. A gorilla trekking permit issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority is required to trek these mountain gorillas. The park wardens will get this permit from you during the day briefing. A maximum of eight individuals, accompanied by armed ranger guides, trek with each gorilla family.

All sectors begin early in the morning with gorilla trekking, when participants are briefed on activity guidelines, assigned to gorilla families to accompany them on their walk, and provided with armed ranger guides to escort them through the bush. Trekkers can meet various park wildlife species, such as birds and plants, during their 2 to 7-hour search for the gorilla family. After encountering these mountain gorillas, you will spend an hour with them as you study their social behaviour and structure.

Gorilla habituation

Gorilla habituation is the process of introducing wild Mountain Gorillas to humans for research, care, and conservation. It allows researchers to study gorillas, treat their injuries, protect them from hunters, and support conservation through sustainable tourism. The Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park lets visitors spend 4 hours with the gorillas, trekking deep into the forest with park rangers to find gorilla families. This experience is more expensive than regular gorilla trekking, with a permit costing $1500 per person. However, it is considered worthwhile as it enables a closer interaction with gorillas while helping them become accustomed to human presence. Habituation takes place in the Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors of Bwindi.

Batwa Cultural Experience

This is one of the budget-friendly safaris in Bwindi National Park for travellers interested in experiencing African culture, specifically through visits to the Batwa community. The tours are guided by locals and start with a nature walk in the jungle, where visitors learn how the Batwa people survived on fruits, honey, and small animals. Participants can visit various homesteads, interact with locals and elders to hear about their history, and see schools and community hospitals.

The Batwa are known for entertaining guests with dances and performances. These tours also aim to raise awareness about the Batwa people, who lost their homes when their forest lands were designated as national parks to protect wildlife like mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. The Batwa trail serves to showcase the traditional lifestyle of the Batwa and ensure their culture is preserved for future generations.

Tourists will learn about hunting skills, building houses from local materials, and traditional medicine practices. They will explore caves that were used during tribal wars and enjoy cultural entertainment. After the visit, guests can return to their lodge for lunch and later participate in a boat ride on Lake Mutanda.

Nature walks

The relatively reasonable cost of $30 for foreign non-residents, $10 for foreign residents, and UGX10,000 for East African natives allows visitors to enjoy nature treks in Bwindi. Every sector office conducts nature walks on various hiking trails. Visitors can see a variety of park creatures, including birds, flora, water sources, elephants, buffalo, duikers, gigantic forest hogs, olive baboons, bushbucks, bushpigs, and monkeys, on the nature trails.

Birdwatching

On a safari to Bwindi, you can enjoy birding after gorilla trekking or focus solely on birding since the park is a top birding destination. The best birding tours are in the Buhoma sector, which has many trails. Bwindi is home to over 350 bird species which 23 are endemic to the Albertine Rift endemics, and skilled birders can see most of them in one day. Some bird species to see include the Rwenzori Turaco, Little Grebe, Rwenzori Apalis, Black kite, Masked Apalis, Equatorial Akalat, Neumann’s Warbler, Bar-tailed Trogon, Black-billed Turaco, Black Bee-eater, Olive pigeon, and crowned hornbill, among others.

When to visit Bwindi

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park allows gorilla trekking all year round, but the best time to visit is from June to August and December to February due to drier trails, better views, and higher chances of seeing gorillas. During these months, the conditions are good because there is little rainfall. Travellers on a budget may choose the rainy season of March to May and October to November for lower accommodation costs but should be aware that trails can be muddy, with thick vegetation, and access roads sometimes get difficult.
