It is located in the rugged northeastern corner of the country, bordering South Sudan and Kenya. It’s the third-largest park in the country, covering an area of about 1,442 square kilometres. It’s the second place in the country with the longest list of bird species, after Queen Elizabeth National Park, with over 600 bird species. Kidepo Valley National Park is known for its rich avian life, with up to 480 bird species that call this amazing park home. The birds include 58 birds of prey, 16 Sudan and Guinea Savanna, 4 Guinea Congo Forest Biome species, 3 of Uganda’s 32 Somali- Masai biome species, 21 Afro-tropical highland species, migratory birds and water birds. These unique bird species attract hundreds of bird enthusiasts to come and enjoy watching them. The park has different spots where bird watching takes place, like Kidepo Valley, areas around Apoka Rest Camp and Narus Valley, all of which offer exceptional bird watching experiences to travellers.

Bird watching in the park is best done either in the morning hours or evening hours when the birds are most active. All sessions begin with a briefing about the rules and regulations of the park. This is a guided activity led by a knowledgeable park birder who helps visitors identify birds by their call, sound, and appearance and gives more information about the bird species that you might encounter in the park.

 Bird watchers are encouraged to prepare a bird watching checklist as it allows them to easily track and identify the park’s incredible birdlife, ensuring they don’t miss any key species and birds that they are interested in seeing.
