Detailed Itinerary
DAY 1: Arrival in Rwanda at Kigali International Airport
On the first day of your 5-day birding safari in Rwanda, a representative from Ganda Cultural Safaris will pick you up from Kigali International Airport. Depending on your arrival time, you will take a short city tour, visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre to learn about Rwanda’s culture and history. In the evening, you will have dinner and stay overnight.
DAY 2: Transfer Bird watching in Nyabarongo and Nyarutarama
On the second day of your 5-day Birding safari in Rwanda, you will have breakfast at the hotel. Then, you will drive to the Nyabarongo River wetland, home to many bird species like Carruthers’ Cisticola, Sharpe’s Pied Babbler, Madagascar Squacco Heron, pygmy kingfisher, white-winged scrub-warbler, and Papyrus Gonolek. After lunch, you will go to Nyarutarama artificial lake for more bird watching, where you might see paradise flycatcher and African fish eagle. In the evening, you will return to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
DAY 3: Full day birdwatching in Akagera National Park
Your 5-day birding in Rwanda safari will begin with early breakfast, and then go to Akagera National Park for bird-watching. As you drive through the park, you will see many birds, including Shoe bill stork, Squacco Herons, grey crowned crane, Papyrus Gonolek, White-winged and Broad-tailed Warbler, Miombo Wren-Warblers, lesser kestrel, Red-faced Barbet, African darter, water thick-knee, Bennetts Woodpecker, and Tabora Cisticolas. After lunch at the lodge, you will return to the park for more bird-watching. In the evening, you will go back to the lodge for dinner and stay overnight.
DAY 4: Morning bird watching and transfer back to Kigali
On the 4th day of your 5-day birding in Rwanda safari, you will have an early breakfast and then travel to Akagera National Park for bird watching. In the park, you can see many birds, including African openbill stock, Water thick-knee, Sauza’s shrike, grey crowned crane, great snipe, African darter, lesser kestrel, Arnot’s chat, long-tailed cisticola, and shoe bill stork, along with animals like leopards, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, and giraffes. After exploring, you will return to your lodge for lunch, check out, drive to Kigali, have dinner, and spend the night there.
DAY 5: Bird watching in Bugesera Valley and depart
On the 5th day of your 5-day birding safari in Rwanda, you will have an early breakfast and then drive to Bugesera Valley for a bird watching experience. You will see many bird species, including the white-winged swamp warbler, papyrus gonolek, white collared Oliveback, papyrus canary, and white-backed duck. After bird watching, you will visit the Ntarama and Nyamata genocide memorial sites to learn about the 1994 Rwanda genocide. You will have lunch and then be taken to Kigali International Airport for drop off.
