Why is Mabamba Uganda’s Top Wetland Destination
Mabamba Swamp, located on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, is Uganda’s most important birding site, home to over 300 bird species. The wetland is of immense ecological importance, having been awarded the status of a ‘Wetland of International Importance’ by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 2006. BirdLife International also recognizes the Mabamba Swamp as an Important Bird Area (IBA). Why is Mabamba Uganda’s Top Wetland Destination, the swamp is home to the Shoebill stork, a prehistoric giant with an 8-foot wingspan, and is one of the few sites where the elusive Shoebill stork can be seen in the natural environment. Mabamba Wetland is an extensive marsh of 16,500 ha, stretching through a long, narrow bay fringed with papyrus towards the main body of Lake Victoria in Mpigi District. The community in Mabamba Wetland is organized under the Mabamba Wetland Ecotourism Association, which includes fishermen, bird guides, hunters, farmers, and craftswomen who all depend on the same resource.

Wetland coverage in Uganda has decreased from 15.6% in 1994 to 8.9% in 2021, with the largest loss occurring between 1986 and 2011. The Uganda Land Commission has frequently leased wetlands, despite being public property. The Wetlands Management Department (WMD) is responsible for maintaining the biophysical and socioeconomic values of Uganda’s wetlands for current and future generations, despite the country’s ownership position.
The Shoebill
The Mabamba Swamp in Uganda is a popular spot for adventurers to observe the elusive Shoebill, a species listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The swamp is named after the lungfish that provide food for the Shoebill Storks. Local fishermen have killed and destroyed Shoebill nests due to stress. However, the IUCN has established a collaboration between the Shoebill and fishing communities, offering visitor trips and generating revenue for the Mabamba Wetland Eco-Tourism Association. Some of the proceeds are reinvested in conservation initiatives.

The Shoebill is a rare bird found in Uganda’s Mabamba swamp, which is home to numerous other majestic birds such as the glossy ibis and long-toed lapwing. Visitors can explore the swamp’s channels in a traditional canoe, listening to a guide about its complex ecosystem. Other notable birds include the Seasonal Blue Swallow, White-winged Warbler, Slender-billed and Northern-brown-throated Weaver, African marsh harrier, Common Moorhen, Long-toed Lapwing, African Pygmy-Goose, Spur-winged Geese, Lesser Jacana White-faced and Fulvous Whistling Duck, Grey-rumped Swallow, Black-tailed Godwit, Greater and Lesser-swamp Warbler, Papyrus Gonolek, African Reed Warbler, Lizard Buzzard, African Wattled Plover, and Grey Headed Gull.
How to Mabamba Wetland
A local boatman will take you in dugout canoes after a one-hour drive from Entebbe to Mabamba. This half-day adventure is great if you have a few hours between flights. You can also take a boat across Lake Victoria to reach Mabamba. You will have ample time to enjoy a variety of bird species, especially water birds such as Lesser Jacana, African Wattled Plover, and African Jacana, among others.
