 Game Drives in Kidepo Valley National Park: Kidepo Valley National Park is a top Ugandan tourist destination that offers unforgettable adventure experiences offering travellers a true African wilderness.  Kidepo Valley National Park began as a game reserve in 1958 and became a national park in 1962 after Uganda gained independence. Game drives are the main activity in Kidepo Valley National Park, which is rich in wildlife. These drives occur in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Early morning drives are exciting as visitors can see animals before they hide and while others graze. Night drives offer the chance to view nocturnal animals like lions, leopards, and hyenas. Other animals commonly seen during drives include side-striped jackals, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes, and hippos.

Rare Animal species to see in Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park is known for its unique animal species that can only be found there and not anywhere else in the country. Besides, seeing members of the big five, Tourists can as well see rare animals like cheetahs, spotted hyenas, kudus, elands, aardwolves, reedbucks, dik diks, caracals, elands, and bat-eared foxes through various activities in the park.

The cost of game drives in Kidepo valley

To go on game drives in Kidepo Valley National Park, tourists need to pay entrance fees. These fees can be paid at the park entrance or the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The costs are $40 for foreign non-residents, $30 for foreign residents, $25 for the Rest of Africa, and UGX 20,000 for citizens of East African member states. Day game drives are free with a licensed driver guide.

Night game drives require armed ranger guides and cost $30 for foreign non-residents, $20 for foreign residents, and UGX 50,000 for citizens. Self-drive without a guide cost $10 for foreign non-residents and residents, and UGX 10,000 for East African citizens.

When to visit the Park

The park can be visited throughout the year; however, some months are more condusive with better experiences than others. However, the best time for wildlife safaris in Kidepo Valley National Park is during the dry season which runs from September to mid- March due to its semi-arid type of climate.

These months, are subjected to intermittent rain or no rainfall is recieved with lots of sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor activities. During these dry months, some distant water sources tend to attract animals when searching for water, allowing tourists to observe them as they drink and eat. The shorter, scattered vegetation improves visibility for photography and wildlife watching. Also, dry game tracks make it easier for tourists to navigate the park, increasing their chances of seeing more animals.

Tourists can also visit Kidepo National Park during the rainy seasons from April to August. While the vegetation will be green, they should be prepared for heavy rain and limited sunshine. Some areas may be hard to access due to slick, slippery, and muddy tracks, affecting animal visibility and views of other attractions.

What to consider during game drive safaris in Kidepo Valley National Park

The Uganda Wildlife Authority has set rules for game drives in national parks to ensure tourist safety, protect wildlife, and conserve the environment. Tourists must use designated game tracks, as off-road driving is not allowed to prevent damage to vegetation.

Littering is prohibited, and trash must be kept in vehicles. Driver guides should not exceed the speed limit of 40 to 60 km/h. Game drives operate from 6 am to 6 pm, and tourists outside the park must leave by 6 pm. Feeding wildlife and making noise is not allowed, and tourists must stay in their vehicles for safety. Smoking is also prohibited in the park.

What is the best time to do game drives while in Kidepo valley national park

Early morning game drives allow you to see active predators before they get back to their hideouts. These game drives last between 3 to 4 hours and start before sunrise. Afternoon drives are good for spotting resting or grazing animals, while night drives reveal nocturnal active animal species hunting or feeding.
