The rainy season lasts from April to August, and during these months, especially in the afternoon, showers often blow in and out of the area.

This is also the best time for wildlife viewing, particularly from November onwards, attracting several animal species around permanent water points, including stalkers. During the rainy season, which runs from April to August, most of the animals disperse away from valleys to higher locations, making it hard for them to be seen. However, it is also good to explore the beauty of Kidepo Valley National Park during the rainy season because the excessive heat tends to be swept away, enhancing birdwatching; dust is washed away; and animals get water sources that are nearer, making them move short distances.
More still, during the dry season, Kidepo National Park can offer excellent elephant and buffalo viewing, where you may encounter dust-kicking herds of up to 4,000 buffalo. Although it’s not a guarantee that you will spot predators like lions, hyenas, leopards, and cheetahs, because all these cats are regularly seen with some frequency. Localized dry-country species adapted to these arid or semi-arid conditions include Guenther’s dik-dik, caracal, aardwolf, lesser kudu, greater kudu, and mountain reedbuck, and bird species like ostrich, Kori bustard, and secretary bird, among others. About 5 primates are present, commonly the ground-dwelling patas monkey. On a lucky day, visitors might see the rare Rothschild’s giraffe or white-eared kob, a wetland antelope that is normally associated with South Sudan.
