Chimpanzee Habituation in Uganda

Chimpanzee Habituation in Uganda

Chimpanzee Habituation in Uganda

Chimpanzee habituation is an adventure activity where visitors trek into the jungle searching for the semi-habituated chimpanzees in their natural habitat while carrying out activities that make them get familiar with human presence. Unlike other countries across the world, Uganda is among the few countries in Africa where chimpanzee habituation takes place. Uganda, therefore, is home to the highest number of chimpanzees globally, which live in various protected areas across the country. Kibale Forest National Park is the country’s highlight, where half of the population resides.

Besides Kibale National Park, chimpanzees in Uganda can be seen in other destinations such as Kyambura Gorge in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Budongo Forest in Murchison Falls National Park, Kalinzu Forest, and Bugoma Forest, among others. Most of these protected areas offer chimpanzee trekking activities since most of the chimpanzees in these areas are fully habituated and are familiar with human presence. For travelers visiting Uganda, the country has only two destinations where the chimpanzee habituation experience takes place, and these include Kibale National Park and Budongo Forest. However, due to the escalating number of chimpanzees, some of these chimps are still being habituated to increase the number of troops for visitors.

Kibale Forest National Park

Kibale Forest National Park, located in Fort Portal, is the top place for chimpanzee habituation in Uganda. It has the highest number of chimpanzees in the world, with many troops still undergoing habituation. Tourists can participate in a four-hour activity to help the chimpanzees get used to human presence. The experience begins early in the morning with a briefing on the rules and regulations. Trekkers are accompanied by ranger guides, chimpanzee doctors, and researchers as they search for the chimpanzees in the jungle.

Trekkers are eager to find chimpanzees, our closest relatives, after searching for hours. They are guided on how to behave to help the chimpanzees get used to humans. This activity lasts four hours, allowing trekkers to record videos, take photos, and observe the chimpanzees’ daily life. To participate in chimpanzee habituation at Kibale Forest National Park, tourists need a permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Prices are $300 for foreign non-residents, $250 for foreign residents, and UGX250,000 for East African citizens.

Budongo Forest

Budongo Forest, located in Murchison Falls National Park, offers tourists a chance to engage in chimpanzee habituation. The forest is home to various chimpanzees, some accustomed to human presence, some in the habituation process, and others still wild. Tourists can join a four-hour chimpanzee habituation experience organized by Great Lakes. To participate, visitors must obtain a chimpanzee habituation permit, which can be arranged by a tour operator or directly from Great Lakes Limited. The permit costs $220 for foreign non-residents, $150 for foreign residents, and $80 for Ugandan citizens. This activity is available year-round, except in July and August.

Best to carry out chimpanzee habituation in Uganda

Uganda can be visited any time of the year, but some months are better for travel. The best time is during the dry season from June to September and December to February, when there is little rain and plenty of sunshine. This makes trekking easier and the views clearer because the vegetation is shorter. In the dry season, it’s also easier to find chimpanzees.

Visitors can still do chimpanzee habituation during the rainy season from March to May and October to November, but it may rain at any time, which can make activities less enjoyable. In the rainy season, trekkers should bring rain jackets and waterproof hiking shoes, as the tall vegetation can obstruct views.
