Activities That Make Kibale a Top Destination in Uganda: Kibale Forest National Park is one of the top destinations in Uganda that offers exceptional adventure activities that draw tourists from different parts of the world. Although the park is famous for its chimpanzee population, making chimpanzee trekking one of the top activities that attract travelers.
The park boasts many other activities that make it one of the top destinations in Uganda. Arguably, Kibale National Park is among the leading primate destinations in Africa, with over 13 primate species, including the highest number of chimpanzees in Africa, hence the name “primate capital of the world.”
Kibale Forest National Park is located in the western part of the country in the shadow of the Rwenzori mountains, spanning the districts of Kyenjojo, Kamwenge, Kasese, and Kabarore on an area of 776 sq. km. Kibale National Park was gazetted in 1932 and officially established in 1993. It’s managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
It’s one of the remaining parks containing lowland and montane forest. Kibale National Park is home to 13 primates, with chimpanzees having the largest population, and mammals such as red and blue duikers, bushbucks, sitatungas, bush pigs, leopards, mongooses, and African buffalo, among others.
This tropical rain forest is home to diverse wildlife species, including mammals, primates, reptiles, butterflies, plants, and several bird species. Chimpanzee habituation
Chimpanzee habituation is a process of making chimpanzees get used to human beings around them, which can take around two years, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society. This is only done in Kibale National Park in Uganda, and the price of the chimpanzee habituation experience is slightly higher.
Kibale National Park has the most exciting chimpanzee habituation experience in Uganda. This usually takes half a day or a full day, giving you ample time to stay with chimpanzees as you watch them breastfeed, copulate, patrol, hunt, and rest.
The chimpanzee habituation experience is done by 4 people accompanied by a well-trained guide and researchers and starts at 6:30 am. To get involved in habituation, you must have a chimpanzee habituation permit, which can be obtained from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Full-day chimpanzee habituation costs $300 for foreign non-residents, $250 for foreign residents, and 180,000 for citizens of East Africa.
Chimpanzee tracking- Activities That Make Kibale a Top Destination in Uganda
Kibale National Park has the largest number of chimpanzees in Uganda, over 1500 chimpanzee individuals. Chimpanzee tracking activity takes you through thick forests using demarcated trails in the forest while searching for chimpanzees.
Chimpanzee tracking is done at 6:00 am, giving you a chance to see chimpanzees get out of their nests, breastfeed, copulate, hunt, patrol, and wake up in the nests. But as you walk through the forest, you can spot other primates like the Central African monkey, black and white colobus monkey, L’Hoest’s monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey, red colobus monkey, and blue monkey.
But to get involved in chimpanzee tracking, you must have a permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority, which goes for $250 for foreign nonresidents, $200 for foreign residents, and UGX 180,000 for East African citizens.
Birdwatching
Kibale Forest National Park is home to 375 bird species, making it a good place for bird watching. While on nature walks and chimpanzee tracking, you can see many beautiful birds, i.e., the brown-crested athele, red-chested owlet, black bee-eater, little green bulbul, yellow-spotted nicator, African pitta, purple-breasted sunbird, white-naped pigeon, and black bishop, among others.
Nature walks
This activity takes about 6 hours and involves walking a distance of 12 kilometers of walking and hiking on a trail through the savannah, riverine forest, swamps, and tropical forest of the park. During nature walks, you can get to see animals like the bushbucks, chimpanzees, olive baboons, and elephants, among others. Hiking and nature walks are best done in the dry season, which are the months of December to January and June to September.

Cultural tours in Kibale Forest National Park take you to local communities around the park. You get to visit the Batooro and Bakiga and witness their traditional art pieces, houses, and traditional dances as you get entertained by local people in local dances and drama, grouped in a rural environment development association. You can also get to interact with elderly people who get to share with you interesting stories.
