This 3-day Kigali city and Akagera wildlife safari will take you to Kigali city, where you will visit the Kimironko local market and, Kigali Genocide Memorial site and learn more about the history and culture of Rwanda. You will visit Akagera National Park, which is the only country’s savannah park and the best place to encounter the African Big Five mammals, elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards, and buffaloes. Visitors will do game drives, which will allow them to explore the open savannah grasslands and woodlands in search of the Big Five and other species. Bird lovers will indulge themselves in over 480 bird species that reside in the park. The scenic boat cruise on Lake Ihema spices up the safari experience as visitors see countless hippos swimming and crocodiles resting in the sunset. Bird lovers will enjoy the melodic songs of various water bird species.
Day 1: Kigali City Tour and Transfer to Akagera National Park
Our company guide will either pick you up at the hotel or at Kigali International Airport and head on a guided Kigali city tour where you’ll visit Kigali Car Free Zone, the Kigali Genocide Memorial site, and the bustling Kimironko local market. You will learn more about the history of Rwanda and its vibrant culture. After the city tour, you will transfer to Akagera National Park, a journey that will take you approximately 4 hours. Along the way, you will have a stopover at Imigongo Art Center to stretch your legs, admire the Imigongo art – a traditional Rwandan art form – and enjoy lunch at a local café. Arrive in Akagera National Park around 5:30 PM, proceed with registration at the park entrance, and head to the Lodge for check-in and relaxation and overnight.
Day 2: Full-Day Game Drive, Boat Cruise, and Night Safari
Day 2 of the 3-day Kigali city and Akagera wildlife safari will start with a hearty breakfast in the morning and head on a morning game drive in Akagera National Park. This will give you a chance to explore the park’s wonders. You’ll encounter the Big Five mammals, elands, oribis, sitatunga, giraffes, zebras, impalas, and various bird species. Bird lovers will find the park a paradise for bird watching, with over 480 bird species that call this awesome park home. After the game drive, visitors will return to the lodge, have lunch, and head on a scenic drive through Akagera, heading towards Lake Ihema, the largest lake in the park and the second-largest in Rwanda. Enjoy an unforgettable sunset boat ride on Lake Ihema, spotting hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species. Return to the Lodge for evening relaxation, dinner, and overnight stay.
The boat cruise offers a new perspective of the park’s abundant wildlife, including hippos, crocodiles, and the iconic African fish eagle. Later, head out for a night game drive at 6:00 PM to spot nocturnal wildlife in the park, adding a thrilling dimension to your Akagera safari adventure. Return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3: Morning Wildlife Viewing and Return to Kigali
After having breakfast, visitors will check out of the hotel and drive through the park for a morning wildlife viewing safari, giving you a final chance to spot hyenas, elusive predators, and any animals you may have missed during the previous two days. You will continue your game drive before heading back to Kigali in the afternoon. You will be dropped off at your hotel, Kigali International Airport, or any other preferred location in the city.
