What Causes Colour Change in Chameleons: There are various components that make this species change its colour, among these are thermal regulation and mating and attraction, among others. Many people always ask, “How does a chameleon change colour? Well, it has chromatophore cells within its skin, and within the chromatophore cells there are four pigments.
These include the erythrophore pigments, which are responsible for colour within the chromatophore cells and responsible for changing the red color. Secondly is the iridophore pigment, a pigment of colour within chromatophore pigments responsible for changing to blue or dark blue and white colour, thirdly is the thermophore pigment, a color pigment within chromatophore cells responsible for changing the yellow colour, fourthly is the melanophore pigment, a color pigment within chromatophore cells responsible for changing the black colour.
Although many people think that chameleons change their color to blend in, it’s not true. Meaning the world has a misconception about how chameleons actually change color. So, what is the truth? Inside the chameleon’s skin you will find the already mentioned cells with different colors, such as yellow, red, and others, similar to pigment cells of other species, like some fish, in the process of expansion and contraction of muscles.
This helps to change all sorts of colors at a faster speed. However, chameleons can’t control these pigment cells. But they also have cells with darker melanin pigment, which they can control like some fish species, which helps them disperse the melanin through their cells, which can help a fish to change its color. In case they want to change the color back, instead they just reverse the process.
What Causes Colour Change in Chameleons: This is similar to chameleons; they can disperse the melanin in their skin to get darker or concentrate it to get a little brighter. Besides, there is another thing that chameleons use to change colour and this is called the use of microscopic crystals in their skin.
These crystals reflect specific colors of light, and by mere change of distance between the crystals, chameleons can change the color of light that they reflect. Hence, some of the tools that chameleons use to change colour.
They can disperse and concentrate melanin in certain cells and change the distance between their skin crystals in order to reflect different colors of light. But the question is, how do they look after changing their colors? From a scientific study, the original color of the chameleon keeps on changing more gradually and not uniformly.
However, not all chameleons look the same when they change color, research shows a certain chameleon can begin with an original brown color and change to very bright green or to black stripes with orange swatches or with much paler colors, like with a yellow tail and feet.
What Causes Colour Change in Chameleons: Chameleons change color to express their moods towards the predators and their mates. Therefore, chameleons don’t change colors to blend but to communicate. They blend in more with their default colour and they change colour.
Well, they are very bright and extremely colorful, which is a terrible form of camouflage. Therefore, most often these creatures change colour as a reflection of their mood. For instance, when they are very bright, that is real excitement as a result of desire to mate or fighting.
On the other hand, when darker, this means being relaxed and more submissive or a sign of no interest. Therefore, chameleons change color because of emotions or impressing a mate.
However, their change in the environment may affect their survival due to being over-stressed, having the wrong humidity, being in a noisy environment, being over-handled, being in a small space, or being caged.
