The 1-day Akagera adventure safari will start and end in Kigali or at Kigali International Airport, Rwanda. This safari will take you to the only country’s savannah park that will offer you the true wildlife experience. This safari will enable you to have a close encounter with Africa’s big five mammals. The park is located in Kayonza district in the eastern province, at the border with Tanzania, spanning 1,075 square kilometres and named after the Akagera River.
Akagera National Park offers diverse landscapes, including savanna plains, forests, and rivers. Historically, it boasted a significant wild dog population, but colonialist poisoning efforts decimated them. Human encroachment and the 1994 civil war exacerbated wildlife conflicts, with many returning residents settling in the park for agriculture, settlement, construction, and cattle launches, leading to hunting and further decline in animal populations, including the big cats, especially the lions.
Rwanda’s new government focused on restoring the park as part of broader reforms, engaging African Parks for management, infrastructure modernisation, and conservation efforts. Significant areas of the park have been reclaimed and secured, allowing for the reintroduction of lions, rhinos, and other previously extinct animals. Currently, the park is home to various mammals, including elephants, hippos, giraffes, zebras, topis, and many more. The government is also encouraging community tourism to benefit local residents.

This 1-day Akagera National Park safari departs from Kigali, with a 3-hour drive to the park. After registration, you will embark on a morning game drive with a park guide, encountering various wildlife species such as animals like lions, rhinos, zebras, topis, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, leopards, and several bird species. Retire and get refreshed, have your picnic lunch, and thereafter, you will embark on a boat cruise at Lake Ihema for spectacular and exciting views.
While on the boat ride, you will have a chance to see several aquatic mammals and water birds such as African Jacana, Pied Kingfisher, Goliath Heron, Yellow-billed Stork, and African Fish Eagle, among others.
