Chimpanzee Grooming in Kibale National Park: Kibale Forest National Park is a renowned destination for chimpanzee trekking not only in Uganda but in Africa at large. Due to the intelligence of these apes, they are good at grooming since they share 98% of DNA with humans, hence drawing tourists from different parts of the world. Here animals are clipped, bathed, or combed to enhance their aesthetic value. For instance, primates such as chimpanzees, gorillas, and monkeys, among others, one of these primates will get close to another and look through its hair and inspect it and the skin for insects, dirt, dead skin, and others.

Grooming in Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees often groom each other or themselves when relaxing. This normally happens when these unique apes are at peace, either in groups or individually. Grooming involves cleaning, sharing, and communicating with individuals or oneself, especially during the time of resting. During this, it helps remove dirt, parasites, and dead skin from their hair. Grooming also eases tension from aggression and strengthens bonds within families and communities.

Chimpanzee Grooming in Kibale National Park:It reduces stress in infants during weaning. A chimpanzee may ask individuals for grooming by approaching another and showing a body part or by starting to groom itself. This behaviour is also important for social interaction and skin care. However, lip smacking is common among primates, especially monkeys, purposely to communicate during social interactions such as grooming, greetings, and social bonding. This closeness, bondage (proximity), and trusting each other form a stronger relationship between these chimpanzees.

What to do in Kibale Forest national Park

The park hosts over 1,500 chimpanzees, making it the largest group in Uganda’s chimpanzee destinations. The trekking experience starts at 6:00 am, enabling nature lovers to study the chimps to see their natural behaviors. Other primates like Central African monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, red colobus monkeys, colobus monkeys, and black and white colobus monkeys can also be seen. A permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority is required, costing $250 for foreign non-residents, $200 for foreign residents, and UGX 180,000 for citizens of East Africa.

Chimpanzee habituation

Chimpanzee habituation is a process where chimpanzees get familiar with humans, typically taking about 2-3 years. This is only done in Kibale Forest National Park of Uganda, and the experience is more costly. The habituation’s duration takes half a day to a full day, enabling visitors to observe chimpanzees and other activities. A maximum of four people, along with trained ranger guides and researchers, participates in the activity, starting at 6:30 am. To join, one needs a chimpanzee habituation permit as a legal document from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Costs stand at $300 for foreign non-residents, $250 for foreign residents, and 250,000 for East African citizens.

Birdwatching

Kibale Forest National Park is home to over 372 bird species, making it an excellent destination for birdwatching for birdwatchers. Visitors can explore top birding spots, especially in Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary and Sebitoli Wetland, where many species live. The park is home to several bird species and these include

Purple-breasted sunbird, red-faced woodland warbler, pin-tailed whydah, green-breasted pitta, papyrus gonolek, and African pitta. Travelers can enjoy adventure activities in Kibale Forest National Park all year, but the best time is during the dry season from June to September and December to February. The dry season has less rain, shorter vegetation for better wildlife views, and good road conditions. The rainy season, from March to May and October to November, is better for budget travelers.
