What to Expect on a Ugandan Gorilla Tour

What to Expect on a Ugandan Gorilla Tour, travellers planning to visit Uganda’s Mountain Gorilla destinations always contemplate the clear expectations on their gorilla safaris to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park. This article will provide you with insight into the gorilla trekking experience, a popular adventure activity that draws tourists from different parts of the world. Gorilla trekking in Uganda’s dense forest refers to the activity of hiking up and traversing through the dense tropical rainforests in search of the habituated mountain gorillas in their natural environment.

Uganda’s Popularity

Uganda, “the pearl of Africa”, is a destination filled with natural beauty, rolling landscapes, diverse wildlife, and a vibrant culture, among others. This seems not enough to capture and express the essence and the stunning beauty of this exciting destination with words alone. Therefore, do yourself a favor: stop contemplating and just offer us a visit!  Therefore, nobody should miss out on this amazing primate adventure experience, at least once in their lifetime.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is carried out in only two popular destinations, Bwindi Gorilla Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, all located in south western Uganda. On the other hand, gorilla habituation takes place in the Rushaga Sector, which lies in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The gorilla habituation experience is the process of trekking semi-habituated mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, where trekkers spend 4 hours with gorillas accompanied by a team of primatologists, conservationists, trackers, and armed rangers, compared to the standard gorilla trekking experience, which lasts for only one hour with mountain gorillas.

What to Expect on a Ugandan Gorilla Tour

Uganda is more popular for its mountain gorillas and is home to more than half of the world’s surviving mountain gorillas in both Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorilla Parks. Seeing these gentle giants in their natural wilderness is an exceptional experience that calls for a permit, which costs $800 for non-foreign residents, $700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for citizens of East Africa. This price is more affordable and quite a saving compared to Rwanda’s $1500.

What travellers should expect on a gorilla tour in Uganda revolves around the experience as a whole. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to your reserved lodge/hotel, rest, have dinner, and an overnight stay in preparation for the gorilla trekking experience the following day. Wake up early in the morning around 5:30 am, prepare all the essentials for the day’s highlight, such as the hiking boots, a pair of trousers, a sleeved shirt, a camera, a waterproof jacket, a waterproof backpack, a pair of gaiters, insect repellent, a water bottle, a brimmed hat, among others.

Have breakfast and drive to the park information centre at 7:30 am for a briefing about the precautions concerning gorilla trekking. You will be distributed in groups of 8 people per gorilla family and head to the jungle in search of mountain gorillas led by armed ranger guides. The trek may take from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas and the pace of the trekkers. You will pass hike up the hills and trek through the jungle where you may encounter other mammals such as forest elephants, duikers, forest hogs, bush pigs, primates such as chimpanzees, blue monkeys, L’hoest monkeys, and several bird species.

Upon seeing these mountain gorillas, you will spend a maximum of an hour with the mountain gorillas as you study their behaviour and social structure, such as feeding, playfulness, movement, physical characteristics, nurturing of their young ones, among others, as you take memorable photos and videos following the precautions after you will return back at the information offices to pick your trekking certificates, as a proof that you have participated in the trekking exercise and contributed to the conservation of the mountain gorillas.
