Uganda Bird Watching Tour

This 5-day Uganda bird-watching tour takes you to explore the country’s top birding locations, including Entebbe, Mabamba Wetlands, and Lake Mburo National Park. It begins in Entebbe, featuring birding at Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC), Botanical Gardens, and Lake Victoria shores. You will also visit Mabamba Wetlands, one of the top birding sites in the country, known for the rare Shoebill Storks and various bird species. The tour will end at Lake Mburo National Park, which boasts over 313 bird species alongside diverse wildlife species, including mammals and primates.
Day 1: Birding in Entebbe Areas (UWEC, Botanical Gardens, Lake Victoria Shores)
After your breakfast, you will begin your tour at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC), which hosts over 170 bird species, including, Weavers, Sunbirds, Herons, Flycatchers, Kingfishers and Raptors such as like the small-banded snake Eagle, Gabar Goshawk, Shikra, African Goshawk, African Fish Eagle, and African Hobby are also present. The safari continues with a nature walk visit to Botanical gardens, home to several bird species such as the Black-headed Weaver, Yellow-billed Duck, African Jacana and a few primates such as vervet monkeys. This will be followed by lunch and a visit to the sewage lagoons in the evening. Have dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 2: Birding in Mabamba Wetlands
Get up early, have breakfast and after head to Namugabo, near Mabamba swamps, where the largest shoebill population is recorded. Birding is mostly done using canoes, with species like Blue-breasted Bee-eater, Sitatunga Antelope, Squacco, African Water Rail, Long-Toed Plover, Lesser Jacana, Black Crake, Goliath, Purple, Herons, Pygmy Goose, Yellow Billed Duck, White-Faced Whistling Duck, Grey and Black-Headed Heron Moorhen, Allen’s Gallinule, African Jacana, Spur-winged Geese and others. En route to Kampala, a swamp may reveal Papyrus gonolek, Yellow-crowned Bishop, Weyns weaver and White-winged warbler among others. You will have your picnic lunch, and after that, you will go birding until evening, for dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 3: Drive to Lake Mburo National Park
After breakfast, you will drive to Lake Mburo National Park in western Uganda, stopping briefly at the Equator landmark experience in Kayabwe, where the earth divides into the northern and southern hemispheres. Birdwatching opportunities are abundant at the Nshara Gate, with species like the African Grey Hornbill, Trilling Cisticola, Common Quails, Emerald Spotted Wood Dove, Lilac-breasted Roller, and African Grey Hornbill, Southern Red Bishop among those potentially spotted. You will have Lunch and later in the afternoon, a game drive along the Zebra Track may reveal species like the Temminck’s Courser, Coqui Francolin, Black Bellied Bustard, and nocturnal animals like leopards. Have dinner and an overnight stay at your Lodge.

Day 4: Early Birding in Lake Mburo National Park
Begin your day with an early breakfast before going on a nature walk to observe various wetland and savanna bird species such as Bare-faced Go-away Bird, Rufous-chested Swallow, African Wattled Plover, with several mammals especially the Impalas and Zebras. After lunch, enjoy an evening game drive on the Kigambira loop, where you can expect to see birds such as the Red-Faced Barbet, Red-Headed Lovebird, Black Collared Barbet, Green-capped Eremomela, and Lead-colored Flycatcher. Retire for dinner and an overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 5: Return to Kampala / Entebbe town/Hotel
On your last day following your 5-day Uganda bird-watching tour, have breakfast and embark on an early morning game drive along the Lakeside Track at Lake Mburo, where birdwatchers can look for a variety of species such as the African Jacana, White Winged Warbler, Papyrus Gonolek, and the rare Shoebill. After returning for breakfast, there’s a launch cruise to observe additional bird species and wildlife like hippos and crocodiles, among others. The journey continues with a stop for lunch in Masaka town before concluding your 5-day Uganda bird-watching tour in Kampala / Entebbe.
