Sports fishing in Murchison Falls National Park is one of the most thrilling activities for adventure enthusiasts visiting Uganda. Murchison Falls National Park is one of the best destinations for sports fishing in the country, situated in the northwestern region, and is one of the most visited national parks in the country.  This is done at the bottom of the falls along  the Victoria Nile. Sports fishing in the park is based on catch and release fishing method, which gives visitors a chance to enjoy the sport and also practice the sustainability of the aquatic species. They use various methods to catch them, like casting lures, live baits, and the spinning method. This is an amazing experience, and visitors should be vigilant of crocodiles and hippos along the river banks.

Short Fishing Experience in Murchison Falls National Park.

This is an exceptional encounter that gives anglers a chance to enjoy sports fishing. This activity is best done in the morning or evening when the waters are still and rewarding. This is a guided activity led by a park guide who protects the participants since sports fishing is done inside the park. Participants should have a fishing permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority, which permits them to do this activity. Sports fishing in Murchison Falls National Park is carried out at the bottom of the falls, either downstream in the pool or on the riverbanks, and participants should be mindful of other water inhabitants like crocodiles and hippos. Guides will also provide assistance for sport fishing, most especially for first-time participants. During fishing, anglers will catch species like electric fish, tilapia, Nile perch, catfish, and tiger fish. Sports fishing is done under a policy of catch and release, which helps to conserve fish species in the river.

Fishing Methods.

Participants are encouraged to carry their fishing gear or hire fishing gear from the lodges. Various fishing methods are used for sports fishing in the park, depending on the size of the fish you are interested in catching such as casting lures method which is used for catching larger fish species like cat fish and Nile perch, live bait like termites, worms to catch smaller fish species like the Tiger fish and spinning method where you will use a 7 spinning rod to catch small fish like tiger fish. Anglers are advised to use rods of 8 feet and 11 feet with a multiplier reel for better results.

The best time to do sports fishing.

The best time to do sports fishing in Murchison Falls National Park depends on the visitor’s preferences. Fishing can be done throughout the year, but the best period is during the dry seasons, which run from June to September and December to February. During this period, the water levels of the River Nile are lower, making it easier to access prime fishing spots below the falls and along the riverbanks. The reduced vegetation and clear waters also improve visibility, increasing your chances of catching fish.
