Mountain Climbing & Hiking Tours

Hiking and mountain safaris in Uganda offer stunning landscapes and views. The best multi-day hikes are in Mount Elgon National Park and Rwenzori Mountains National Park. For shorter hikes, there are half-day and full-day trips to places like Sipi Falls, Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabinyo, and Mount Gahinga. Mountain climbing attracts adventure seekers, and East Africa is an ideal destination. Uganda provides numerous opportunities for hiking and climbing. Visitors can explore the snow-capped John Speke Peak on Rwenzori and the slopes of Elgon, among other beautiful locations.

Hiking/ Climbing the Rwenzori Mountains

Rwenzori Mountains, or the “Mountains of the Moon”, are located in south-western Uganda, along the Congo border. It has a snow-capped peak and lower slopes filled with bamboo, forests, and moorland. The mountain hosts diverse plant life and a variety of animal species, including 70 mammal species and nearly 220 bird species, with some endemic to the Rwenzori. It attracts many climbers, especially those aiming for Margherita Peak, which requires 7-8 days for skilled climbers. Less experienced climbers can take easier routes or explore nearby Bakonzo villages for cultural performances and local meals.

The Rwenzori snow-capped peaks

The astounding and thrilling Rwenzori Mountains are made up of six distinct mountain ranges. Mount Stanley, which is the highest of all at 5,109 metres, followed by Speke at 4890 metres and Baker at 4843 metres. It is fascinating to note that all of these peaks are completely covered by non-seasonal glaciers, despite being only a few miles north of the equator crossing. Hiking the Central Circuit Trail or the Kilembe Trail will get you to these spectacular peaks.

Wildlife in Rwenzori Mountains National Park

Rwenzori Mountains National Park is home to around 70 different mammal species, including four that are only found in this park and three other rare species. Notable mammals include Rwenzori otters, chimpanzees, elephants, and leopards. While wild animals are rarely seen in the park’s dense forests, visitors may spot various primates like black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and Angola colobus. Small antelopes like bushbucks are also present but hard to find, along with uncommon reptiles such as the three-horned chameleon.

The park is known for its unique plant life and varied types of vegetation found as you ascend to its peaks. These include tree heathers, bamboo, montane forests, and afro-alpine zones, featuring distinctive plants like giant groundsel and lobelia, which grow at altitudes of 3,800 metres. Additionally, the park supports 217 bird species, with 17 being unique to Rwenzori National Park, making it an important area for birdwatching. The forest zone at 1,800 metres hosts many birds, including the Lagden’s Bush Shrike, Rwenzori Turaco, and others, making it a vibrant area for wildlife enthusiasts.

Mountain Climbing on the Elgon

Rising to a height of 4321 metres above sea level, Mountain Elgon is one of the few extinct volcanoes in Uganda and is situated in the country’s eastern region. Once thought to be the highest in Africa, Mount Elgon has lost height due to ongoing erosion. Since Sipi Falls and Elgon Mountain are in the same vicinity, you can combine the two mountain climbing activities. The best time to hike Mount Elgon is during the dry season because the trails will be less treacherous than during the wet season.

The Sipi Falls

The Sipi Falls, situated in the foothills of Mount Elgon, are a trio of waterfalls, measuring 75, 85, and 100 metres. One of the most recognisable sights in the eastern part of Uganda, these waterfalls are undoubtedly the most exquisite in the country. Sipi is becoming a popular destination for day treks since it is conveniently located near Kampala. The approximately 7-kilometer hike to all three waterfalls takes up to three hours on average to finish.

Virunga Volcanoes

Uganda has three major volcanoes in the Virunga Mountain range, in the southwest near Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These volcanoes provide unique hiking opportunities with beautiful views and are home to rare wildlife like Mountain Gorillas and Golden Monkeys.

The first volcano, Muhabura, is the highest at 4,127 meters and takes about five hours to reach the summit, which has a small crater lake. Mgahinga is 3,474 meters tall and offers a shorter, easier hike but a trickier crater lake. Sabinyo, at 3,645 meters, is the most challenging hike and is located near Kisoro Town. At its peak, hikers can have captivating and stunning views of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, all at once. Mgahinga National Park is also popular for gorilla trekking, while Sabinyo provides a stunning 360-degree view of the Virunga range.

Conclusively, hikers and adventure enthusiasts can have life-changing experiences on Ugandan hiking and mountain climbing safaris. For the ultimate experience, however, tourists can also opt to go on a combined hiking and mountain climbing safari with Gorillas and Wildlife Safaris, which ensures a unique and fulfilling encounter amid Africa’s serene settings.
