Volcanoes National Park is a misty highland situated in the northwestern region of Rwanda, celebrated for hosting the endangered mountain gorillas. It’s not only a home for mountain gorillas, but it also has an impressive number of bird species, making it a remarkable destination for bird enthusiasts and ornithologists. It is part of the greater Virunga conservation area, which comprises three national parks, including Mgahinga National Park, Virunga National Park, and Volcanoes National Park. The park has a rich biodiversity, such as bamboo forests, montane forests, swamps and alpine vegetation that provides habitat to various bird species. It hosts up to 237 bird species, including 17 Albertine Rift endemics, forest birds, migratory birds, water birds and the park’s endemic species.
