Rwanda, commonly known as the land of a thousand hills, is an incredible safari destination that attracts thousands of nature lovers to explore the country’s rich biodiversity. This 5-day Rwanda gorilla and chimpanzee safari will take you to the most loved safari destinations in Rwanda. The safari will start from Kigali and end in Kigali. It will take you to Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of the remaining tropical rainforests in East Africa. It is known for hosting chimpanzees in Rwanda, and it’s one of a kind Canopy walks. Volcanoes National Park, which hosts the endangered Mountain gorillas, will give you a chance to come up close to these magnificent creatures, and you will have a cultural encounter.

Day 1: Pick up and Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk.

Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking and Ibyiwacu Cultural Tour.

Day 5: Kigali City Tour & Transfer to the Airport.

Detailed Itinerary.

Day 1: Pick up and Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Our company driver guide will pick you up from either your hotel or from Kigali International Airport. You will meet and greet, and later he will brief you about your 5 day Rwanda gorilla and chimpanzee safari. You will have a scenic drive to the southwestern corner of Rwanda as you enjoy the breathtaking views of the rolling hills, unique vegetation cover and the welcoming people of Rwanda. You will have a stopover at the former King’s palace museum, where you will learn more about the history of Rwanda. You will have lunch en route and proceed to Nyungwe Forest National Park. You will check into the lodge, relax and prepare for the next day.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk.

Your  day 2 of 5-day Rwanda Gorilla & Chimpanzee Safari will begin with an early morning breakfast and head to the park headquarters for a briefing about the rules and regulations of chimpanzee trekking. You will be divided into groups of 8 participants and meet your assigned park guide. You will walk through the forest in search of the chimps, and chimpanzee trekking takes between 1 to 4 hours, depending on where the chimps slept.  After locating them, you will spend 1 hour with them learning more about their behaviours. After you will have lunch, return to the hotel and prepare for the late afternoon canopy walk. A canopy walkway is a suspended bridge, 160m long and 70 meters from the ground. This walk starts with a briefing at Uwinka visitor’s centre about the dos and don’ts of the activity. This starts at the Igishigishi trail, which takes about 2 hours, visitors will have a chance to explore the tropical rainforest from above. They will enjoy the breathtaking views of the park from above, and bird lovers will be delighted in watching various bird species. They will also see various primates like black and colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, and more. After you will return to the lodge, have dinner and rest.

Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park.

On this day, you will wake up at your leisure, have breakfast and check out from the lodge. You will start on a journey to the Mighty Volcanoes National Park, which is approximately 5 hours drive. This will be a scenic drive as you will explore the breathtaking views of the countryside. You will have lunch en route, upon arrival, you will check in to the booked lodge, relax and prepare for the long waited day.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking and Ibyiwacu Cultural Tour.

Your day 4 of 5-day Rwanda Gorilla & Chimpanzee Safari, will begin with an early breakfast and transfer to the park’s headquarters for a briefing about the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking. You will be put into groups of 8 participants, and each group will be assigned a game ranger who will lead and give more insightful information about the gorillas and other wildlife species you might encounter. Your guide will lead you into the park in search of the mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking takes about 1to 6 hours, depending on where the gorillas slept. You will meet various bird species, and once gorillas are found, you will spend one hour with them, learning more about their behaviours and, of course, take as many pictures as you want. You should note that gorilla trekking involves hiking steep slopes, so you should assess your level of fitness before participating. After you will have lunch and head back to the lodge. In the late afternoon, you will have the Ibyiwacu cultural tour, which will give you a chance to interact with the local people and learn more about their cultures through storytelling, traditional dances and more. Later, you will go back to the hotel and have dinner.

Day 5: Kigali City Tour & Transfer to the Airport.

This day marks the end of your 5 day gorilla and chimpanzee safari in the land of a thousand hills. After having a hearty breakfast, you will check out and transfer to Kigali city for a short city tour. This will give you a chance to explore the country’s unique cultures and history. You will visit the Kigali Memorial Centre, the Kimironko market and the art centres. After you have lunch, transfer to Kigali International Airport.
